Preparing for birth during Pregnancy

If you have any symptoms prior to pregnancy, it is best to come to therapy before conception, as some treatment modalities are not advised during pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, there is still a lot we can do to make life more comfortable for you. If you have any specific complaints, we will focus on that during the session.

For prevention we generally assess / teach the following:

  • posture, spinal mobility
  • breathing technique
  • abdominal function
  • pelvic floor muscle function (checking movement with underwear on- preferably thongs – for the     assessment- during the 1st trimester and generally after as well. Exceptions can be made for full pelvic floor muscle palpation assessment during the 2nd and 3rd trimester if necessary (e.g. no visible muscle movement)
  • positions for labor and pushing and breathing techniques during the birthing process

You can read more about the treatment techniques on  this page. Note that those with an asterisk indicate techniques not advised during pregnancy and all treatments done on the abdomen need to be postponed until after birth.

Please be aware that you should not book an online appointment, if you have a high risk pregnancy and are not allowed to exercise or sex is not recommended by your doctor ( e.g. if your placenta lies so low, that it is on the cervix, or you had medical interventions to conceive and are in your first trimester). Please call or write an email in this case so we can discuss your situation beforehand, as many assessment and treatment techniques are not recommended at this time.
